In August 2018, IPOR worked with Professor Melina Platas from the Political Science Department at New York University (NYU) in Abu Dhabi to undertake a study on school norms in Malawi (n=700). The study was aimed at finding out perceptions on education and how social norms contribute to schooling. Conducted in Mangochi district of southern Malawi, the study involved data collection from parents drawn from different religious persuasions to gauge their attitudes on the value of education.

A team of IPOR research assistants travelled to 20 enumeration areas (EAs) across Mangochi district where interviews were conducted. The EAs were selected in areas under traditional authority (TA) Makanjira, Jalasi, Chimwala, Nankumba and senior TA Namabvi. School Norms Study was the first study for IPOR to work with NYU, Abu Dhabi.
